Supreme Court Judge Strength Increased to 38
In a major step aimed at reducing the backlog of cases and speeding up the judicial process in the country’s top court, a historic decision has been taken to increase the sanctioned strength of judges in the Supreme Court of India.
President Draupadi Murmu on 24 May approved the Cabinet decision to increase the number of Supreme Court judges from 33 to 38, including the Chief Justice of India.
Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal shared this information on the social media platform X, stating that the ordinance amends the Supreme Court Act, 1956.
Under this amendment, the number of judges (excluding the Chief Justice of India) has been increased from 33 to 37.
The proposal was earlier approved by the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 5 May.
