Indore Urban Population Crosses 28 Lakh
The house listing exercise conducted during the first phase of Census 2027 has highlighted the rapid urban expansion of Indore city.
According to preliminary estimates, the population within the Indore Municipal Corporation limits has crossed 28 lakh, compared to around 19 lakh recorded in the 2011 Census.
This indicates an increase of more than 9 lakh people over the last 15 years.
The number of houses and constructions in the city has also more than doubled during this period.
Rapid Urban Expansion
Out of 3,898 enumeration blocks created for house listing within the municipal area, work in more than 3,660 blocks has already been completed.
Current figures show that around 8.08 lakh constructions have been identified within the urban limits, while the number stood at only 3.96 lakh during the 2011 Census.
Experts believe that one of the major reasons behind the rapid increase in population and construction activity was the inclusion of 29 villages within the municipal corporation limits in 2014.
Following this expansion, the number of municipal wards increased from 69 to 85.
Major Development Areas
Over the past 15 years, rapid development has taken place in areas such as:
- Super Corridor
- Khandwa Road
- Dewas Naka
- Ujjain Road
- Bypass Road
- Devguradia
- Rau
- Airport Road
Several new residential colonies and housing projects have emerged in these regions, attracting people from different places for employment and other opportunities.
Municipal Commissioner Narendranath Pandey stated that nearly 96 percent of the house listing work has been completed and the process is expected to finish by May 30.
Residential Building Statistics
The survey revealed that out of the total 8.08 lakh constructions:
- 5,75,726 are purely residential buildings
- About 22,000 constructions are used for both residential and commercial activities
- More than 87,000 constructions were found vacant
