India Issues Standards for Up to 30% Ethanol-Blended Petrol

On 18 May, the Government of India initiated technical preparations to increase ethanol blending in petrol up to 30%.

New fuel standards have been issued for E22, E25, E27, and E30 blends, marking a major step beyond the existing E20 fuel program.

This means petrol in the future may contain 22%, 25%, 27%, and up to 30% ethanol, respectively.

The move signals India’s effort to reduce dependence on imported crude oil and strengthen energy security amid global uncertainties.

Rising geopolitical tensions in West Asia and fluctuating crude oil prices have increased concerns about stable energy supply.

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) issued notifications on 18 May introducing these new fuel blend standards, which came into effect from 15 May 2026.

Currently, the country is implementing E20 fuel, which contains 20% ethanol blended with petrol.

The decision comes at a time when global crude oil supply chains are under pressure due to geopolitical tensions affecting key maritime routes.
