IGNOU Becomes a Model for Inclusive Education, Reaching Rural and Marginalized Communities
The Vice President highlighted the transformative role of IGNOU, describing it as a pillar of India’s open and distance learning system that has significantly expanded access to higher education across the country.
Emphasizing its inclusive reach, he noted that IGNOU has over 1.4 million students, including 56% women and 58% from rural and marginalized communities.
He stated that the university’s student population exceeds that of several countries, reflecting its major contribution to educational equity, social mobility, and national development.
He encouraged students to pursue lifelong learning, uphold values, and contribute to nation-building.
Referring to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Vice President said IGNOU remained resilient due to its established distance learning model.
The university effectively used digital platforms such as SWAYAM and e-Gyankosh to ensure uninterrupted learning, emerging as a leader in technology-driven education.
