Government Cancels Singhast Land Pooling Scheme in Ujjain After Farmer Protests
The Madhya Pradesh government has made a major decision by completely canceling the Singhast Land Pooling Scheme in Ujjain. This decision comes after strong opposition and warnings of an upcoming protest by farmer organizations. Following this, the state government has annulled the Ujjain Development Authority's proposed Land Pooling policy under Scheme Numbers 8, 9, 10, and 11, aimed at the long-term development plans for the Singhast Kumbh Mela 2028. The Urban Development and Housing Department has issued an official order to this effect, which also annuls the previous amendments. The decision was published in the official gazette.
The move follows a firm warning by the Bharatiya Kisan Sangh (Indian Farmer Union), who had announced an indefinite sit-in protest from December 26 if the scheme was not fully canceled in writing. The Kisan Sangh had made it clear that there would be no dialogue until a formal order was issued. Following this, tension between the government and farmer unions escalated.
The Land Pooling Scheme was initially proposed as part of the long-term development plans for the Ujjain region in preparation for the 2028 Singhast Kumbh Mela. The scheme aimed at acquiring and redeveloping farmers' land, but it sparked massive dissatisfaction among the farmers. The farmer organizations accused the government of trying to implement the scheme without their consent, fearing permanent adverse effects on their lands.
Earlier, the government had issued an amendment on November 19, but the farmers had demanded a complete cancellation of the scheme. On December 26, the Bharatiya Kisan Sangh had warned of a massive protest in front of the Vikramaditya Administrative Building. The cancellation of the Singhast Land Pooling Scheme is being seen as a significant victory for the farmer organizations and their movement.
