Assam Assembly Passes UCC Bill, Becomes Third State Moving Towards Uniform Civil Code

On May 27, the Assam Assembly passed the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill, making Assam the third state in India after Uttarakhand and Gujarat to move towards implementing the UCC.

The bill was introduced by the government led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The proposed law includes several important provisions related to marriage, divorce, a ban on polygamy, and mandatory registration of live-in relationships.

However, Scheduled Tribes (ST) residing in the state have been kept outside the scope of this law.
